Salsa or bachata: which should you learn first?

It is one of the first questions beginners ask. The honest answer is that it matters less than it seems, and at our academy you do not have to choose. But the two dances do feel different, and it helps to know how.

Where they come from

Both are Latin social partner dances, and both grew inside a culture rather than being invented in a studio.

Salsa grew out of Cuban son and other Afro-Caribbean music and took its modern shape in New York in the 1960s and 70s, where Caribbean musicians mixed their traditions.

Bachata comes from the Dominican Republic. For a long time it was the music of the countryside and working neighbourhoods before it became popular across the world.

The music, the rhythm and the way partners move in each dance all have historical reasons. We do not turn that into a lecture in class, but it shapes how we teach.

How they feel different

Rhythm. Both use eight counts. In salsa you step on three counts and pause on the fourth: one, two, three, pause, five, six, seven, pause. In bachata you take three steps and mark the fourth count with a small tap or hip movement.

Tempo. Salsa is usually faster. Bachata is usually slower and more even, which is part of why many people find its basic step easier to pick up at the start.

Movement. Salsa tends to have more turns and travelling around your partner. Bachata tends to be more compact, with more of the movement in the body and the connection between partners.

Music. Salsa music is built on percussion and horns. Bachata music is led by guitar and is often romantic in tone.

So which first?

If you want a general rule: bachata's basic step is often easier in the first few weeks, while salsa takes a little longer to feel comfortable but opens up a lot once it does.

But what makes someone a good social dancer is mostly the same in both: shifting your weight cleanly, hearing the beat, leading clearly or following attentively, and staying connected to your partner. Those skills carry over. Learn them once and both dances get easier.
