Your first salsa class: what to expect

Most people are nervous before their first class. They worry they will be the only beginner, that everyone will be watching, that they will not keep up. Here is what actually happens, so there is less to wonder about.

Before you come

What to wear. Comfortable clothes you can move in without overheating, and shoes with a smooth sole that will not stick to the floor. You do not need dance shoes.

When to arrive. About ten minutes before 6:30 pm, so you have time to change your shoes and look around without rushing.

A short form. Before your first class you will be asked to sign a liability waiver. It is standard for any physical activity and takes about a minute.

A partner. You do not need one. About half the room comes alone.

During the class

We start from the very beginning: how to shift your weight from foot to foot. Nobody expects you to know anything, and you will not be the only beginner in the room.

Partners rotate throughout the class, so you will dance with several people, not just one. This is part of the method. It is also the fastest way to stop feeling self-conscious, because everyone is in the same position and nobody has time to watch anyone else.

Two instructors teach together, one leading and one following, so you can see both sides of each movement at the same time.

You will probably notice that your head is too busy to think about anything else. Hearing the music, finding the beat, remembering the step and feeling your partner all at once leaves no room for replaying work. People often say afterwards that they feel lighter.

Common worries

"I have no sense of rhythm." Almost everyone says this. Rhythm is a skill, not a talent, and it takes a few weeks to build.

"I can't remember movements." You are not expected to. Social dancing is not memorised choreography. You learn a small set of building blocks and how to combine them in the moment.

"I'm too old to start." Many of our students started after thirty, forty or fifty. Most of the room will be roughly your age.

After the class

If you liked it, you can take an unlimited month for $100, from the day you pay through the same date next month. Or keep coming one class at a time for $20. Either way, nothing renews on its own.

If your plans change before you come, a class is tied to the season rather than a specific date. Come on any other Tuesday or Thursday instead.
